Discover more from 101 Things I Learned About Fiction from Film
Let me start off by saying this is not a regular post, and in fact I’m writing to let you guys know that I’m going to be pulling back from the current regularity of my posts. I’m sorry that I’m not able to honor the original commitment I set out to follow when I started this Substack, which was not too long ago. But I hope you can understand that this is a way for me to make space to other things I would like to focus on and share with you in the long run.
In general, one of the things that I’ve come to learn about the writing life is that when it calls you down a certain path, you have to trust in it and follow. Nonfiction writing—and in particular, craft essay writing—is not my forte, and while some might look at this as an early stop, I want to assure that this has been a good experiment for me to follow thus far, and I intend to continue it in some form. It’s been insightful in seeing ways I can stretch muscles I don’t normally use in my regular writing. But in this vocation, fiction is and will always be the greater love of my writing life. And now that a second novel project has come calling, I’ve decided to post much less than I have been lately. Hence, from posting biweekly, I will now be posting at least once a month.
To add to that, I want to let you know that in future posts, I’m thinking of deviating a bit from the current format I’ve been following thus far. This Substack has been an opportunity for me to try different things, whether in writing or in other media. And aside from essay writing, I’ve started editing videos that roughly lean towards the spirit of this newsletter. In the future, I may send new videos I’ve made, instead of craft essays, illustrating certain ideas or techniques I’ve adapted from film for my fiction, or to speak about the writing life, as I’ve done in the most recent video I’ve put together.
To cap this brief post off, I’m sharing that video here and now as a little treat for you. Submitted for your approval, here is THE WRITING LIFE with WES ANDERSON:
Thank you for following, and I hope you continue to find the things I share here insightful, if not at least entertaining. See you next month!
